Introducing Piecemeal Poetry
My next seasonal notebook, running throughout March.
Each of my seasonal notebooks have responded directly to my frame of mind at the point at which I announce the next theme, a month before starting my daily posts. January 2026 has been exhausting for many reasons, and none of the ideas I had for my next notebook on my short or even my long list seemed to fit. I knew I needed to pace myself, to allow time for mental and physical recuperation, but I also needed to do something where I could indulge in language, relish in something slower, deeper.
I have decided that I will spend the month of March writing a single poem. I have no idea how this will go, as I tend to really only write poetry when the mood or a particularly urgent idea seizes me. And, on top of that, I have barely written any poetry in the last several - many! - years.
But there is something simultaneously indulgent and exciting about leaning into the detail of a poem slowly over the course of a month.
So, throughout March, I will jot down ideas for the first draft of a single poem that I will then share at the end of the month. I am certain my process will change and adapt throughout and, though I have some ideas about how to approach this notebook, I really don’t know what will work until I get started (and, even then, whether it will work at all).
But isn’t that half the fun?
I’ll see you all on the first of March.
