I’d decided a while ago that we’d go into town this morning to have a Christmas coffee and cake, and to listen to the inevitable choirs and buskers sing Christmassy music - but the winds had clearly deterred whomever had booked the usual spot outside the bank. I’d already been caught out in the torrential rain whilst giving Scapa a good run round the woods, but we managed to dodge the worst of it in town later, at least. (As I type, the wind is still battering the house.)
Later, I managed to sit down in my snug, glass of wine and a notebook and pen to hand, flicking through a book. It is not an exaggeration to say I have waited pretty much an entire year for that moment. The others were watching a Christmas film in the other room and, though there were still Things To Do, I wasn’t going to delay it any longer.
Friends called round later still (one dressed as Father Christmas, much to the delight of the girls!) to drop off some gifts and wish us all a merry Christmas. And, this evening, Auri and I curled up together and I read her the final few pages of The Children of Green Knowe.
A mad and busy day, but a special one, filled with important moments.
Horribly windy here too but Christmassy nonetheless xx
